Current CAP Students

During your CAP year, you’ll take courses that have been approved for transfer to UT Austin. The approved CAP course listings vary at each of the UT System universities that participate in the program, but each university offers a large number of courses from which CAP students may choose. Work closely with the CAP academic advisor at your UT System university to make certain that the courses you take are on the approved course list.

All coursework must be taken at the UT System school you attend during the fall and spring semesters of your freshman year. Summer semester may be included if your CAP program requires a summer start.

Credit hours completed during a “mini-mester” or “Maymester” at your UT System school will not count toward the 30-hour requirement.

The mathematics courses you can take to fulfill this requirement are on the approved course list for the UT System university that you are attending.

If you’re prepared to enroll in a math course beyond College Algebra when you begin your CAP year, you will work with your academic advisor at the UT System university you attend to select an appropriate course. The mathematics course you take will be counted toward your 30 hours of required coursework.

If you aren’t prepared to enroll in a math course beyond College Algebra when you begin your CAP year, you will need to take College Algebra in the fall of your CAP year, then another mathematics course in the spring to fulfill your mathematics requirement.

If you take College Algebra in the fall, it will count as part of your 30 hours of required coursework. However, the grade that you earn in College Algebra will not be considered when your CAP GPA is calculated. In such cases, your GPA will be calculated using your other 27 hours, and you must earn at least a 3.2 GPA on those 27 hours of coursework.

College Algebra (Math 301) does not apply to the math requirements for most degree plans at UT Austin.

Not Ready for College Algebra?

It is especially difficult—if not impossible—for a student who is not prepared to enroll in College Algebra in the fall to successfully meet CAP’s mathematics requirement by the end of the spring semester. If you know that you will not be able to complete this requirement, you should consider other educational options. Speak with the CAP academic advisor at the UT System university you’re attending to find out more about your options.

None of the individual grades you earn for transferable CAP courses can be below a C, regardless of your cumulative GPA. If you make a D or an F in a course during the fall semester of your CAP year, you must retake that course (or take another course in its place) during the spring semester.

If you retake a course, you may consider the course only once when calculating your semester hours of transferable coursework. That means that you’ll have to take at least 33 hours of coursework to obtain 30 hours of transferable coursework.

Your transcript must include final grades from both the fall and spring semester at your UT System school; don’t request it too early. It must arrive by June 1, or the following Monday if June 1 falls on a weekend.

Some universities may send your transcript without your having to request it, but others may not. It is your responsibility to find out what you need to do to make sure your transcript gets to us by the deadline.
